The Greatest Couple (in the universe)
[Pieces of Taxi #16]

In the foggy cool of what would have been a hot summer’s night any place else (south of Nome) a snapping and pouting couple got in the taxi on a street of fine Italian restaurants.
Man first, he slides in from the right rear across the back seat to sit firmly upright arms crossed over his heart like a wall behind me.
His mate, his mistress, maybe his wife, a partner on this night’s team in this two-person team sport they’re playing, performed the most graceful knee-swing entry and stretched for the door that I half wished I’d run around to close for her.  I prefer to watch women move, however, so I did not help.  Instead, I appreciated.
We are dancing on the open covers of our gaping tombs.  Nevertheless, moments of beauty….
“You are stupid and should not have the right to any opinion!” her hubbie blurted.
An ominous void of silence followed, leaving me no other recourse but to say, “Could you sit on the other side, sir?”
   “Beg yer pardon!”
“Men to the right rear, man.”
   “What?!” he yelps.
“Well, if you’re a robber, you could kill me easily from there!  Are you a taxi robber?”

[I have found that nobody ever answers yes to this question.   But it puts the passengers on notice that they’d better not be robbers or they could find themselves rolling down one of our Seven Sacred Hills w/o a driver.  My hand is on the door latch: I’m rehearsing my old football shoulder roll in my head.]

“He’s not that kind of a robber,” the lady uttered darkly.
“Good then,” I uttered, taking the woman’s word for it.  “Where to, folks?”
I drove on in rather foreboding silence in the same direction I was pointed when I got them.  After a few more dullish moments filled with the ostentation of their neo-self-indulgent expressionism of pouting, she smiled into the rear view, and asked, “Why don’t you ask Mr. Know-it-all where he wants to go?”
   OK.  Yes.  Well?
I mumbled as I punched the meter.
They gave me both their addresses—leaving me to decide the matter.
So we cruised off to make the choice rolling along in silence.
A silence, which she soon broke by saying, “You are too stupid and should not have the right to any opinion.”
   Plain enough.
“Ha!”  He went, unswayed by her retort, identical to his starting broadside.
“YOU are too stupid and should not have the right to an opinion!’ he reiterated warmly.
    “You should not…!”  “You should not….”  “You…”
   Suddenly, I’d heard enough!
Forced to interject simply for my peace of mind (I felt some risk of becoming collateral damage) I recommended, “Why not say, WE are stupid…et cetera…?”
   There ensued a long silence.
   During which I went, “Huhm?!”
“We used to,” she said.  “We used to say, ‘We are too stupid to have an opinion.  But he changed it one day…one fine male chauvinist day!”
She spat the letters, c-h-o-w-v-i-n-ist day.
Huhm, he went, pursing his lips in a way I found decidedly unattractive and pompous.  Then began stroking his chin professorially he pronounced,  “I remember it differently, dearest.  I remember having my degrees disparaged as, and I quote, ‘unrealistic, over-priced ivory-tower opinionationisms…!’”
   What!
“…yes, and brainwashing.  I believe you said that also I had been brain-washed by my education.”
Why!  You!  You know you were talking about the limitations of the female brain!  Math and science…in my face! Mr. Larry Summers!  How could…you?!  I aced physics!”
“Yes, you who strikes the first blow, Madame Curie!   You, who, can dish it out with the best, but…”
“Dish it?  Sexist!  You denigrated my mind!  My choices.  That’s what started it.”
   “You attacked…!”
   “I defended…!”
   “You…!
   “You!”
“WAIT!” I screamed at the rear view.  “Stop it!”
They crossed their arms over their hearts and got their pouty little kid lips going again.
“Hey!  Let’s go get some ice cream!” I suggested.
   Vanilla.  He said.
   Chocolate.  Stupid!
“OK.  Wait!”  I intervened quickly.  “I know where that comes from: gimme something hot and cold and black and white, demanded the petulant princess to her cook.   Or it’s gonna be off with your lousy head!”
“The next day, he brings for desert, a first, an invention, a great big hot chocolate sundae.  And so proved vanilla and chocolate were made for each other.  Dig?
“And it don’t matter who started it.  See?
“Whenever a cabbie gets up a dead end, I told ‘em, he stops, turns around, and goes back to where he came from.  Not all the way right away, but to where he began to get lost.
   “We reset.  Restore.
   “Start over.
   “We escape the bad place.
“Drive down hill, to the river.   Follow the river to the sea.  Across the sea is either France or China.  So you’ll never really be lost.  The big sky up above, land under your feet.  Or tires….
“So remain seated and listen up!
“You guys taught me something: we’re all too stupid to have the right to an opinion!  We should be seeking out facts.
“He said it first!”  She butted in.
   “You started it off.”
“Well, you said the stupid part.”
   “I remember saying, ‘opinion.’”
“I’m just as sure you said…”
   “That’s your opinion!”
   “It’s called memory.”
“OK!”   I shouted at the windshield.   “Dudes!”

“We’re almost there.  Listen.  It’s a team game.  Let me believe you can do it again.  Start over.  Create something complimentary…a hot fudge sundae…besides this rancor.  Go back to whenever…you were BOTH not really stupid, y’know?”
   So.  Tell him that!
   Tell her!
They mumbled something inaudible to their own selves.
All right.  I pulled over at the corner absent any more exact verbal instructions.  Ten bucks folks!  …and skip the tip.
Here’s a 20.  You may keep it, sir.
20?! She goes.  Why did you….
I was already around the back opening the door to the side walk.   “Hey,” I went, ostensibly talking to the guy over her, but meant for her ears only.  “Did you slide across the seat to save her the inconvenience?  I mean, to wipe the seat of any untoward taxi juices for her lovely dress.”
“I do like to kind of clear the way with my pants,” he said.  “Just in case. Although it inevitably places me behind the driver.”
“He always does that,” she smiled.  “One time he found a knife in the seat crack.  He might have been cut.”
“It was a switch blade--although closed, dear.   And, rather difficult to turn over to the cabbie.  I must say.  He wanted us out.  Rather alarmist, I thought.”
Save that opinion, I thought, smiling at them, jimmy-jamming my 100% tip into my grimy cabbie pants…

Analysis of the Angels, of Love and Death.  Slow but sure.  But you know that? What about the kids?
analysis:
grumpy old men notwithstanding, the heat is on.  and/or up.  The Heat is arming not to defend us from the heat, but to beat us up if we squeal.
Adding fuel to that fire is the fact that climate is changing and has already changed.  The ocean is more acidic--we don't have to guess too hard to figure out where that came from.   Coral died to warn us decades ago.   now will come any shelled animals, including plankton.   whales eat these.   i forget the name. it's krill. aspen are still moving north but too slow to escape their beetles.  same with pines.
burning has been a human endeavor for centuries if not eons.
is it too hard for you to figure out how global warming can create high snow in New York?
well, when it's hotter more water evaporates: that's maybe why the oceans won't rise 40 feet like Al Gore said.  water can remain in the atmosphere.  until it can't anymore.   then it whirls up a low (heavy) air force that begins to spin out of control.  it sucks up energy and grows into a small or massive climate change and blows civilization into the next nightmare.  it makes messes.  in excesses.   it is not as gentle as before.  and the runoff includes crops and dusters, ships and low-hanging fruit of once pretty sea shores, gold courses, fisheries, and ports.  so does mankind cause it?  could it be coming from the sun...or god...or some uncounted cycle?  no matter.  we have the power to adjust to it to diminish its power no matter what the cause.  if we take out CO2 from our atmosphere it will be reduce the water in the air no matter what those other so-called possibilities do.
if we can go electric from solar and wind, could there be any harm?  when the world health is at stake people argue about the remedy?!   i'm not shocked, but dismayed.  sit upon some hill over-looking your city at rush hour, pick a rooftop.  you will see the barrels of oil rolling by.   for one thing, it cannot last forever.
so improve the batteries.  yes.  but we'll still need some gas for jet planes.  if we want to travel.  let's just cut back.  China is coming up and they'll want drive-in movies!   they must go solar.  they already control the cellular part of the industry.  so they're in.
natural gas is not so bad, as a transition and for cooking.  it does not spread cancer all over the food.   why not?
why not escape from coal?  just in case.  it's filthy anyway.
we need to save every endangered species we can.   which one will be the end-trigger?  my guess is plankton.   not so much trees.   there are trees that can live in foul air.   eucalyptus for example.  and palms.   the jungles are also shrinking, which kills all life.   once the spongey soil is replaced with dead zones life moves on to another zoo.   this one is called Earth, shrinking even as our stupidity over-populates it more and more.   who says not to use condoms: the catholic church, and Islam, wherever more warriors are needed.   nice job by self-serving religions.
there is little chance in this scenario that the meek will ever inherit the Earth if there remains anything of value to inherit.
one more idea: do not be alarmed.  oh go ahead...shiver with fear. what if something triggers IMMEDIATE global warming of 5-6 degrees?   AND both the arctic and antarctic melt in one year?   the glaciers all melt.  and 90% of that water goes into the air?  as water for rain  creating more low pressure zones for ever-greater storms of destruction of life-giving rain?  What if in two years, all the cities under 10 feet elevation get crushed by giant waves?
will we see martial--read fascist--law?  is that why the arming of police forces everywhere with military equipment?
is this how we wish to cure over-population?
will we actually have to worship the rockefellers rothschilds and morgan and duponts and lady beatrix who owns 21% of Shell, or will be able to pray to the corpos for our daily bread?  justa couple bucks at the door.

Cheney and Bush were like a couple of 12 year old boys all pumped up on GI Joe comics, attacking a wasps nest in the forest not far from their jet-propelled anti-gravity vehicle protected by the demur Dumbercat minority in congress just in case they needed to whip up some faux immunity from calling the fire department to put out the wasps.
Or if that's too long-winded, i think the Kurds got to come and take over Texas and all the gun-toting Texans ought to go make a million in Kurdistan.

The Beach

THE BEACH: Part I of SWIMMING TO FUKUSHIMA
[This one for S.]

….just listen to ‘em: cryin’ out, “Me!   Lookit me!
as if.   oh there’s a boy checking me out.   walking down by the wetstuff.   it’s not my imagination.  is he a hustler?  he looks too young for even the depravedhungry of this city.
the Beach is louder than the kids who play here.   messier than play.
this is the school of play.
the Beach lies still gettin’ worked over 24/7 with a foot massage and various night time inspections and scratchings free of charge.
the Beach is high and dry.  it has cold feet.
Upland, it’s guardians, the blue quail cry, “Chee-ca-go Chee-ca-go!
2 times as they run away from their nests.
the Beach is swept by the breezes/storms/the hot sun/
cooled nightly by the spray.
--home to a zillion garbage-picking litter sweepers from
the sand flies, sorting out the quick and the dead to
the sand crabs (peering intently myopically/politically
from their transient burrows wond’rin’
if you’ll move yer head)
the seagulls the sand birds like the sanderlings who run out dart back before the surging waves spearing morsals we’re too slow to see bubbling up between the waves…pokin’ right round  where i tossed a hang nail--ulp--
they flew 1,000 of miles for this trove.
sand dabs were nibbling at my toes, in the shallow,
wishing now
pieces of me’d wash down.
sea urchins urgin’ me in, “Sleep here!”  they cry.  “With us…
with us…!”
i’m feeling da love, start makin’ an angel in the sand
with my arms and legs, it’s snowing in Chi-town.
sand mites, sand bacteria...sand viruses...catch that…painting my bones with their saliva in their dreams.
but i am un-incorporated.
you are my only incorporation--otherwise i, l’hommie, have not one sure foot on this dumb deaf and gorging gorgeous planet, my desire.
i threw my brains at your feet and and i breathed free.
one grain of sand a tiny world a half a pair of hands clapping in a poet’s audience.   for a poet.  self a grain of sand.
in the poetic beach of eco-wordia.
we all want to write our truth one kaliedoscopic mish-mash
of colored motion in the maze of our emotion so everyonecanseeit.

to dream of capturing the silently splashing waves of thought…
to assess, devolve, reconstruct, redux the sound of one’s own silence.   silly peurile pearls of fearful, revelatory, insightful, harmonious,  enlightening, clear-ities from points of view so dispartate that not all can be true to everyone everything, allthetime... that... starts...
from silence…
hiding --for one fleeting minute-- from cacaphony.
silence that begins with listening...to hear
the quietude, dude!
of the void.
whereas everyone wants to speak;  [ if just for a piece of the action. ]
to think is to listen.  i listen to the waves that pour over me at my desk.  in bed.   here, as the sands trickle through my fingers...
i think in language therefore i write, or therefore i am, or was,
if these neighbors of mine have their way.
we are small and countless: grains of sand.
everyone wants to be counted; no one wants to stand up for anything.
[ that horrid risk of being washed away. ]
we’d be majestic mountains, vast prairies, fixed,
promontories, unfeelingly sturdy,  heartless, rock-like immutables.
so hard-ass we’d rather float off in space than join the party.
[ somehow less scary than being in one place all the time:
eternally trapped. visited never visiting: no one invites the mountain down, the cape across the bay, the valley: to come on up an’ see us sometime.]

everybody wants to know the ANSWER, but nobody wants to read.
everyone wants to get in the game, no one wants to practice.
everyone wants to be a hero; no one wants to risk.
everyone wants to kill something, nobody wants to get shot.

everyone wants to be free, and yet, is repulsed by politics:
If you don’t get into politics, politics will get into you.

everyone wants to change the world, but nobody wants to change.

every poet wants to make her guesses too deep to get:
every grain of sand wants to be a beach.

---o---

...there’s a boy keeps looking at me…
my eyes half closed.   waiting.   glancing upland at suspect armies of cohorts, all 14 with daggars, arrastra’j’oes, they call ‘em in Brazil.   They give me the Creeps.   This is His Hashtag World.
Wanna rest in the hot sand? whole world wants a bite.
Penguin lying in the sloshing waves-exhausted.
..mermen rising from the waves.  mermaids laughing…

.this water’s too cold.
for
joy
.
.
.
everyone looking up land

Racist disasters:

The mildness of this type of analysis helps to explain the word with regard to standard journalistic practices: ANAL-isis.   This is a disease that fails to include any form of certitude in blaming those who have the power for not having used it to aid or protect their own constituents, not to mention as in the case of China and Warren Buffet, Peabody and the greedy clowns of Wyoming with their 2 mile coal trains destined to Bellingham and Shanghai, and of course the Koch Bros, who want to saturate the world with CO2 as thick as they possibly can.   Can we at least pay attention to this absurd phenomena?   it is obvious that greed plays, and pays it's part, but more than that is this latent unmentionable RACISM...that becomes even more strident when one learns that Daddy Kock was the founder of the John Birch Society, the last descendent of the Ku Klux Klan...or are we afraid of lawsuits when we mention these supportive arguments.
      TO A CONSPIRACY THEORY!
If this had happened anywhere WHITE there would have been immediate electrolysis machines sent in, and steak dinners from the Outback, gift packs from Macy's for perfume to cover up the (temporary) stench.   one chopper per family.  gift cards for Big Macs made on food trucks, in competition with Wndy's and Burger kings like KFC...and free Kock Coke for everyone making over 100,000 a year.
Let's take statistical look.  Name the areas of weather disasters for black or brown peoples: Haiti, Sri Lanka, Aceh, Philippines, Bengla Desh, Somalia, the entire Sahel, Central America, including Honduras, Belize, NOLA, Rockaway Beach NY, droughts in S. India, floods in Pakistan, as well as coincident(?) economic damage in all places not white, like the inner cities of America, including untoward lies and stress in Japan and China.   China is the master of Dead Zones, having killed all their rivers and almost all the fish in the China Sea.
There is more.   But let's think a bit here.   We know or should have heard that most famines are man-made and man remedial.   We know the rich white nations are stealing the resources of the 3rd or brown world, as always, and will leave nothing to support the masses who are being ripped off.   The leaders of those poor benighted nations, not "developing," are criminals, but at least they're our criminals.
WE, the white citizens of this tired old planet are simply bad Samaritans.
And not to be trusted--that's for sure.

poem for a bad neck

for jessica, who is always in good spirits!

turn over!   yeah.
sleep on the other side.
get a new pillow
if you got one now, burn it!
quit golf.  drink jack black...again.
wake up every 2 hours and put yourself on the other side.
be like Condi, never look BACK!
walk softly, but keep it even.
Don't drive.
sleep in the van.
get a puppy.
(or a monkey)
play on the slide.
play on the side
swim
swim more.
try breast strokes.   [ask first]
   go down.  y'know how!
   do not be shy.
do not eat fish anymore.
no shrimp either.
no ocean crawlers,
no late night stallers,
no conglomerate ballers
no duck no oysters no clams
no crabs.
no sea gulls.  sea gulls eat garbage and fish.
drop yer cat off in Vegas and see if it finds you again.
if it does,
put your neck on the cat.
wrap the cat around your neck.
use vanilla rub body heat, at Rainbow and helath stores near you.
no needles!  use accupressure!
forget real pressure: life is fake.
sit up straight or don't sit up at all.
lie down a lot.
try thinking in total silence.
talk to the birds.
do not look up! it scares them.
you big lug.
don't eat them.
no bacon no butter no beer,
no back up no bailout no bench!
keep on keepin on
don't stop
when ya do stop ,
start up   >>>>>>
do it now and do it later.
[it just wasn't good enough]
it's never good enough
poems are never done.
so don't get excited.
getting excited is one of those changes
we who would change the world have to make.  so...
start over
life is starting over.
go see 20 feet away...and, this is the end.
yer neck will get better

VAGO

Antibody:

CHAPTER 1 THE VAN

"Inside.  We must look inside," said the policia.
He spoke softly from the cliff's edge, looking down at the wreck.
His partner, who (did not answer, was merely wondering again--for the
millionth time--how it happened in life that great wealth piled up in some quarters
and in others did not.
Neither moved.
The one who had spoken continued to ponder the possibility of passengers
--surely the tumble down would have killed anyone within.  As they
wondered and pondered--it was a long climb down--the timeless pulse
of the ocean, and the sudden collapse of a wheel, combined to loosen the
broken van from its setting in the rocks below.  It slipped over on its
side into the water of the Sea of Cortez.  It rocked gently back and forth
with the action of the waves, trapped and bruised, while the two cops silently watched.
From a high spot on a powdery road not far away, a pair of indios
coolly observed the scene.  Descended from those who were once the world's
greatest long-distance runners, these ones, whose genes remembered, even
if their memories could not, out-running, out-lasting really, a band of
Apaches on horseback across barren desert--no desert is barren--to deliver
mouthfuls of water as evidence of their warrior-hood....
These ones considered how this van, this home, smashed upon the lap of
the sea, might best be saved and put to use.  These ones saw the van as
shelter for doe-eyed, dusty brown innocents who would be forced by the chill of winter coming to sleep in a pile together under grimy blankets
because the sticks and the mud and the tarpaper do not keep out the wind
the way a metal car would.
These two brown, wiry men stood silently and watched.  Then, without
comment, under the phlegmatic watch of pelicans perusing the shore from
ancient flight patterns, they trudged off toward the bus
and another day
in the
mine.
Later, from one of several police vehicles attracted to the scene with roof lights flashing cosmetically as if there was someone to warn and something to warn them of,
two of the greener rookies make the arduous climb down the cliff to discover that the van is vacant.  They find no broken corpses, no bodies tossed out on the way down, no signs of
violence or skid marks from the brakes being applied on the surface above.
There remains one item of peculiar interest.  A clue, perhaps.
An old shot-gun lying in the grass where the van had gone over.
It points out to sea as if purposely laid.
Meanwhile, out on the highway some seven kilometers to the east, a lone early-morning hitch-hiker with backpack begs a ride.  The ride he catches is headed south, but to this young man direction does not matter.
As he climbs into the truck a thirty year old ex-school bus passes by,
no longer the familiar yellow, blue-gray now,
crying out (from faded letters on its dusty flank):
"Minas de Sal de Sonora S.A.
Sonora Salt Mines.
Within the bus two of the miners, indios, note the hitch-hiker with flat acceptance.
"Este," says one.
"Si, por supuesto,” nods the other.  They concur without more being said.  Of course.
It was gringo.
Come down.
